Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
